"One of the greatest challenges in urban residential architecture is designing homes for narrow lots with street frontages between 12 and 15 meters. Creating a layout that accommodates every essential space without sacrificing natural light or valuable outdoor living areas requires careful planning. With this modern 2-story house design for a narrow lot, I set out to solve exactly that challenge, delivering a 3-bedroom home design with generous interiors, an efficient footprint and strong architectural presence."

Smart architecture for narrow lots: living wide on a compact site
Many narrow lot house plans fall into the trap of the so-called "railroad" house - long, dark and repetitive interiors. This modern 2-story brick house is designed for a narrow lot so every room enjoys natural daylight while preserving privacy, comfort and a strong connection to thoughtfully integrated outdoor living spaces.
On the ground floor, the nearly 70 m² (754 sq ft) open-plan living area brings together the living room, dining space and kitchen as distinct yet naturally connected zones. This level also includes a flexible room that can serve as a quest bedroom or home office. Upstirs are two additional bedrooms, while all three bedrooms benefit from private bathrooms. The layout is completed by a utility room, covered parking and practical storage solutions.

The architectural concept is defined by two elongated volumes, carefully layered to create a refined sense of depth while preserving the clarity and balance of the overall composition. Pergolas protect the transition spaces, providing shade and comfort throughout the day in changing weather conditions. Brick facades establish the home's identity with a timeless, understated appearance that feels equally at home in contemporary urban settings and quiet residential neighborhoods.
At the rear, the design extends into a private outdoor retreat with an optional swimming pool, seamlessly connected to a covered lounge terrace and barbeque area. This becomes the heart of outdoor living and entertaining, while the circulation between the covered carport, entrance and courtyard follows a clear, intuitive sequence that enhances everyday comfort.
